Servings

Instructions

  1. Add Del Maguey Vida Puebla or Del Maguey Vida Clásico, fresh lime juice and agave syrup to a cocktail shaker.
  2. Fill the shaker with plenty of ice.
  3. Shake vigorously until the outside of the shaker feels very cold.
  4. Strain into a rocks glass full of fresh ice.
  5. Express the oils from a large orange twist over the drink, rub it lightly around the rim, then place it as garnish.
  6. Shakingthis vida rita cocktail with plenty ofice is key to achieving the right texture and temperature.
  7. The goal is a drink that feels cold, smooth and slightly diluted so that the mezcal, lime and agave blend into a single, harmonious sip. A good, hard shake for around 10–15 seconds usually gives you the ideal result.
  8. Straining into a rocks glass packed with fresh ice helps the Vida Rita stay chilled from the first sip to the last. The large orange twist is more than just a garnish: it releases aromatic oils that sit on top of the drink, adding brightness to every inhale before you taste the mezcal.

Tips for the best Vida Rita Drink

For the best expression of the vida rita, start with quality ice and freshly squeezed citrus. Old or watery ice dilutes the cocktail too quickly, while bottled lime juice lacks the brightness that makes this recipe so refreshing.

If you find the drink too tart, add a small extra splash of agave syrup; if it feels too sweet, increase the lime juice slightly until the balance suits your palate.

You can also fine-tune the character by choosing between Del Maguey Vida Puebla and Del Maguey Vida Clásico. Try the recipe with each mezcal side by side to see how the flavor shifts.

Serving the Vida Rita in a pre-chilled rocks glass and taking a moment to properly express the orange twist will enhance the aromas and make the cocktail feel even more polished.

  • Adjust sweetness by adding or reducing agave syrup 5 ml at a time.
  • Always use fresh lime juice for maximum brightness and balance.
  • Chill the glass beforehand for a colder, more elegant serve.
  • Take time to express the orange twist over the surface of the drink for extra aroma.

Delicious variations you can try

Once you have mastered the classic vida rita recipe, it’s easy to experiment with small tweaks that keep the structure but change the personality. A simple way to add complexity is to introduce a flavored rim, such as sea salt mixed with a touch of chili powder, which enhances both the smokiness of the mezcal and the freshness of the lime.

You can also play with additional ingredients while keeping the base of Del Maguey Vida Puebla or Vida Clásico, lime and agave. A slice of muddled jalapeño will give you a spicy Vida Rita, while a barspoon of quality orange liqueur can add a subtle sweetness and depth.

The key is to make small changes and taste as you go, so the mezcal remains the star of the glass.

  • Spicy Vida Rita: lightly muddle a slice of jalapeño in the shaker before adding the other ingredients.
  • Chili-salt rim: rim half the glass with a mix of sea salt and chili powder for a smoky, savory edge.
  • Citrus twist: swap part of the lime juice for fresh grapefruit juice for a softer, more aromatic profile.

Vida Rita FAQ

Any expression works — the recipe lists our recommendation. Vida Clásico and Vida Puebla are approachable, versatile choices for most cocktails, while single village expressions like Chichicapa or Tobalá add more distinctive character.
Del Maguey mezcales are balanced rather than aggressively smoky. In a cocktail, the smoke softens into a warm, roasted-agave depth — citrus, sweetness, and dilution round it out, so the drink stays bright and easy to enjoy.
We recommend freshly squeezed every time. Bottled juice loses the aromatic oils and bright acidity that balance the mezcal, and the difference is easy to taste in a three- or four-ingredient recipe.
Yes. Agave syrup and simple syrup are usually interchangeable, most orange liqueurs can stand in for each other, and garnishes are flexible. Keep the mezcal, the citrus, and the proportions, and the drink will hold together.
