San Luis Del Rio, Oaxaca

San Luis del Río is dramatic: mountains rise so sharply they seem to lean over the road, their slopes packed with spiky agave plants that turn the landscape blue. The car feels tiny against these vertical walls, and at the valley floor, a fruity humidity gathers; palm trees grow along the Río Hormiga Colorada (Red Ant River). A stone arch greets visitors with the legend “Mezcal es Vida”, which says it all. It depicts Don Paciano, patriarch and icon of the whole town, standing proudly among his agaves. Three hours from Oaxaca City, San Luis del Río feels like a good party: a charged mix of long standing mezcal tradition and vibrant, modern energy.

San Luis Del Rio, Oaxaca

BUILT FOR THE BAR, BORN FROM THE HILL

Mezcal Vida from San Luis del Río is built with bartenders and mixing in mind, yet unmistakably rooted in place. Bursting with fruity aromatics: honey, vanilla and roasted agave, it opens wide in the glass. On the palate: ginger, cinnamon, burnt sandalwood; a touch of banana-leaf sweetness lingers at the finish.

San Luis Del Rio

A Tapestry of Agaves

San Luis del Río lies within the municipality of Tlacolula de Matamoros, in Oaxaca’s Central Valleys. Its steep mountains are planted so densely with espadín that the slopes look like a living tapestry of agaves. The mineral-rich rock is almost fluorescent red and green, which gives the soil its strength and mezcal its earthy flavour. At the valley floor, the Río Hormiga Colorada still flows, though now reduced to a narrow stream. The air there grows humid and sweet; papaya and mango trees line the houses, their fruit perfuming the streets.

San Luis Del Rio

THE STORYTELLERS OF SAN LUIS

The Cruz family are fantastic storytellers. Around the table, mezcal is poured from garrafones into endless caballitos as they tell poignant stories of crossing the border on foot and returning home to keep doing the work they learned as children, coming back from school to the palenque. Each story carries the same spirit as Mezcal Vida itself: determined, charismatic, and unforgettable.

Las Milpas

Las Milpas is made from the stuff of fantasy. A dreamy, isolated place some three hours away from Oaxaca City, with only a handful of houses overlooking the rolling hills in the open landscape. San Baltazar Chichicapam

San Baltazar Chichicápam, about an hour from Oaxaca City, is a desert valley shaped by microclimates that create astonishing diversity. In just a few steps, the arid, stony landscape turns into a misty zone beneath ancient sabino trees (Moctezuma cypress), beside a river, the Río de la Amargura. As with the almost unreal nature that...

San Jose Rio Minas

San José Río Minas is a very small village in Oaxaca’s Mixteca Alta. It takes about four hours to get there, but the drive is surreal: it runs through microclimates, milpas, small streams, and wild agave fields as far as the eye can see. The town sits at high altitude but inside a valley, on...

San Pedro Teozacoalco lies about three and a half hours from Oaxaca City, in the great mountains and dormant volcanoes of the Mixteca Alta. The town appears after...

Santa Catarina Minas

Santa Catarina Minas is a striking blend of Oaxacan beauty with a Mediterranean touch. The blue-and-white church anchors the center, and across town, fenced gardens (rare outside the capital) overflow with flowers and tall pines. Streets are wide and paved, and one notices trees that seem out of place among typical Oaxacan flora: tabachines, araucarias,...
