What Is the Call Ron Cooper?

Call Ron Cooper is a playful tribute to Del Maguey’s founder, created by celebrated London bartenders Alex Kratena and Simone Caporale. It’s a swizzle-style drink combining blanco tequila with Del Maguey San Luis del Río Single Village Mezcal, Velvet Falernum, fresh lime, Peychaud’s bitters and agave nectar.

Tequila and mezcal share the glass here: the tequila keeps things bright and peppery while San Luis del Río brings its signature smoke and fruit. Falernum’s clove-lime spice and the agave’s sweetness make it read almost tropical.

Built over crushed ice and swizzled until frosty — then, as the recipe insists, “garnished absurdly” — it’s a festive, refreshing way to enjoy two agave spirits at once.

BY ALEX KRATENA AND SIMONE CAPORALE — LONDON, ENGLAND

  • 1-3⁄4 ounces blanco tequila
  • 1 ounce Del Maguey San Luis del Río Single Village Mezcal
  • 1 ounce Velvet Falernum Liqueur
  • 1⁄2 ounce freshly squeezed lime juice
  • 3 dashes Peychaud’s Bitters
  • 1 tablespoon agave nectar

Combine all the ingredients in a highball glass, and then fill it nearly halfway with crushed ice. Using a swizzle stick, swizzle the drink to chill. Top off with more crushed ice and garnish absurdly.

Call Ron Cooper FAQ

Any expression works — the recipe lists our recommendation. Vida Clásico and Vida Puebla are approachable, versatile choices for most cocktails, while single village expressions like Chichicapa or Tobalá add more distinctive character.
Del Maguey mezcales are balanced rather than aggressively smoky. In a cocktail, the smoke softens into a warm, roasted-agave depth — citrus, sweetness, and dilution round it out, so the drink stays bright and easy to enjoy.
We recommend freshly squeezed every time. Bottled juice loses the aromatic oils and bright acidity that balance the mezcal, and the difference is easy to taste in a three- or four-ingredient recipe.
Yes. Agave syrup and simple syrup are usually interchangeable, most orange liqueurs can stand in for each other, and garnishes are flexible. Keep the mezcal, the citrus, and the proportions, and the drink will hold together.
