About Del Maguey

What is Del Maguey?

Del Maguey is a single village mezcal produced by individual Zapotec and Mixtec farmer-families. Del Maguey introduced artisanal mezcal to the world in 1995 and celebrates the traditions of ancestral villages that give each unique expression its own rich, sweet and smoky character.

What's the history of Del Maguey?

In the 1970s, visual artist Ron Cooper and his friends traveled south from Los Angeles and visited Oaxaca for the first time. A decade later, Ron embarked on an epic adventure to meet the artisanal crafters of a magical spirit known as mezcal. In 1995, Del Maguey Single Village Mezcal company was launched, bringing artisanal mezcal out of the shadows and introducing it to the wider world.

Our mezcal is more than just an Agave distillate made in Mexico. It is the culture and heritage of indigenous families. The origins of mezcal go way back, and its ancestral making process is deeply connected with Mexico’s history.

Where is Del Maguey mezcal made?

Each of Del Maguey’s single-village mezcals is made by individual family producers in remote villages in Oaxaca and Puebla using 400-year-old Zapotec methods.

How is mezcal made?

The crafting of mezcal is an art with centuries-old methods that honor the agave plant. Learn about the different types of mezcal and explore the journey from the mezcal plant to the bottle.

What does Del Maguey mezcal taste like?

Every bottle of Del Maguey Single Village Mezcal is a “taste of place,” the union of the agave plant and ancient traditions. As a terroir-driven spirit, every expression seeks to capture the taste and story of the village it comes from. Explore our collections here:

How should I store my bottle of Del Maguey mezcal?

Whether you prefer añejo or joven mezcal, knowing how to store and serve it properly ensures you get the most out of every sip

Mezcal should be kept in a cool, dark place, like a liquor cabinet or cellar, to prevent it from spoiling. Avoid direct sunlight, direct heat, and extreme temperature fluctuations, as both can compromise the spirit’s flavor and aroma.

Keeping the mezcal in its original bottle, sealed tightly with a cork or cap, minimizes air exposure and helps retain its original taste.

What is the shelf life of a bottle of Del Maguey? How long can I keep it for?

While an unopened bottle can maintain its quality for many years, an opened bottle should be consumed within a few years to enjoy the spirit at its best.

How to Enjoy

How should I drink Del Maguey?

While Mezcal is traditionally consumed neat, there are several nuances to consider when enjoying mezcal to fully appreciate its unique characteristics. Mezcal is not meant for rapid consumption but rather for slow sipping and savoring.

Use a traditional mezcal shot glass or a small snifter to serve mezcal. These vessels enhance the sensory exploration of the spirit.

Mezcal should be served at room temperature. Chilling can dull its intricate flavors and captivating aromas.

Consider pairing mezcal with traditional Mexican dishes like tacos or enjoy it as a digestif after a meal.

Sip your mezcal slowly, allowing each note to unfold and reveal its complexity.

For a perfect tasting experience, use the “kiss” technique.
